Hi. I'm trying to find out the chemical make up of the planets Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Thank you for any information you might have.

Saturn is composed mostly (97%) of Hydrogen, with some Helium (~3%) and trace amounts of other elements including Methane. Uranus has 83% Hydrogen, 15% Helium, 2% Methane and small amounts of acetylene and other hydrocarbons. Neptune is similar with 85% Hydrogen, 13% Helium and 3% Methane. Mars is a little harder to measure, because it has a solid surface, but it is thought to have a similar interior to Earth - an Iron core surrounded by rocky mantle. The distinctive red colour of Martian rocks is due to chemical oxidation (they have gone rusty).

Hi, I have been searching for the name of our solar system for hours. I can't seem to find it. You have so much useful information on this web site I thought you might know. Thank you so much.

You can't find the name because it doesn't have one! It's just called the Solar System I'm afraid. Since we are only now starting to discover planets around other stars, we haven't needed to give it a name. Some wise character has picked up on this, and created a website where you can play the Name The Solar System Contest (Just don't expect the International Astronomical Union to endorse it!)

You're the best. After sending you my e-mail, I researched more sites and guess which one was the one that best answered my question. Yes, the one you recommended. Thanks for your help. You really know your stuff.

Hi, I'm currently involved in a school solar system project! You page is a lifesaver! All the best and thanks!

Thank you so much for this page! I found some that were too technical and others, too basic for my 4th grade son. His project is to write about one of the planets - he chose Venus. This was just perfect! Thanks again!

Hi. I am Alex. I am in fourth grade and doing a science project on planets and whether people weigh the same on each one. If you have any sites that would be informative, please send them to me. Thanks for a great site.

The perfect site for you is Your Weight on Other Worlds. It includes a form where you can enter your weight and then see how much you would way on other planets, moons and stars. This is followed by a clear explanation of why it happens.

Hi my name is Kathy. I would really like to tell u that having this web site is neat and cool. See I'm helping my son with the solar system and that gives me the chance to remember when I had to learn it and how we seem to forget things when we get older. Thank u for having this web site it is really neat. Have a nice day

Do you know the names and how many moons each planet has?

Data, including the names of the principal moons in the solar system can now be found in the Virtual Solar System Datastore.

Greetings, We are homeschoolers in the USA. We want to do some type of scale model of the Solar System for a Science Fair project. We have been told that projects using the scientific method will be preferred. Could you give us some help on formulating hypotheses that could be tested on a model of the Solar System? Your website is great! Thanks so much.

One of the most fundamental things about the orbits of the planets in our solar system is the way the orbits match Kepler's laws almost perfectly, due to the force of gravity. Maybe you could try to incorporate that into your project.

I hope you don't mind that I copied some stuff off our page for a research project for school. If you are angry or upset let me know and I will not turn in the assignment. sorry if I angered you.

I wouldn't put information on the web if I didn't want people to use it! You are free to use the information in whatever way you wish, although if it is for a school assignment you should put it in your own words rather than copy the text exactly!
